What historical event fascinates you the most?
HIS BACKGROUND.
This 14th century English Theologian and Reformer, first set out to study philosophy. His hunger for knowledge brought him into the study of scripture.
A Catholic from birth, this lecturer began seeing the truth about what the Bible says and what Catholic doctrine represents. The lavished and idle lifestyle of the Friars to the detriment of the poor triggered him to study further.
THE REFORMATION
Wycliffe advocated for the scripture as the highest authority, not the church or the pope. Many were reformed, and they began preaching with wycliffe’s articles in the market squares in different towns.
EVENT THAT LED TO THE TRANSLATION
Wycliffe took ill from a deadly disease. On his dying bed, the religious leaders and state of officials visited him. The Friars were so happy with his condition and asked him to confess to them and be free from eternal damnation. Wicliffe gently woke up from his bed and, with the last of his strength, said this words,(Paraphrasing)”I will not die but live.” Indeed, his words came to life, and he lived, long enough to translate the entire Bible and had transcribers to produce several copies for distribution.
Need not say the church threatened his life severally. Others reformers before him were jailed or killed, especially when they were called to Rome. On all attempts, and even when Wycliffe was summoned to Rome, God made a way for him to be saved and acquitted. He put His words in his mouth, and he was able to defend the course.
God had a mission, and Wycliffe only died when that mission was completed. Translating the entire Bible.
As a Christian, this is one historical event that fascinates me a lot.
